Update in progress....
Welcome to the Beta Phi Chapter of the Phi Sigma
Society. The purpose of this web site is to enhance the interest and
support for the Society. The Phi Sigma Society
is a national graduate student honor society for the promotion of
research in the Biological Sciences. Membership in the University of
Texas at Arlington (UTA) chapter is open to all biology graduate
students in good standing, and all incoming students are strongly
encouraged to join and actively participate in the Society. Phi Sigma
is currently the official means of graduate student input into Biology Department affairs
(e.g., faculty candidate searches).
Every semester the Society offers
small research grants on a competitive basis. Phi Sigma also sponsors
an active seminar series which brings to UTA quality speakers
involved in current research in areas of graduate student interest.
In addition, the society funds and organizes several social events
throughout the year that serve to increase interaction among graduate
students and between students and faculty. Membership in the Society has traditionally
required a $50 application fee. Benefits include lifetime membership,
a one-year subscription to Bioscience, guilt-free
attendance at Phi Sigma functions, and perhaps most importantly, the
eligibility to receive research grants through the Society.
The Phi
Sigma room is located on the first floor (127) of the Life Sciences
Building. A refrigerator, microwave, and in the future. Names will be added to the
card swipe door once a semester and only includes members.
Phi Sigma generally
holds a meeting early each Fall and Spring semesters, and then
usually the first week of the month during the semester (depending on need). All UTA graduate students are
encouraged to make an effort to attend Phi Sigma meetings and find
out more about the graduate student organization and the Biology Department.
